Housing First Stories
from people involved in the programme
William had been in and out of prison for 13 years before joining Housing First.
“I’ve gone from constant prison recalls to now being out for the last 18 months, I now have a home, I have access to my children and most of all I feel relaxed and happy with life.”
Louise has spent the last 11 years in prison. When she came to Housing First she was in a cycle of sofa surfing and rough sleeping.
“My support worker helped me feel more at home in the community. I started to move away from negative relationships.”
Tom had been homeless for seven years when he came to Housing First.
“I can feel I’ve started to move away from street life, I’m enjoying doing things that other people might take for granted like going for a coffee. I’m feeling better about myself.”
Prior to Housing First, Joan, who had drug and alcohol issues, spent 4 years sleeping rough.
“I don’t feel judged on Housing First. Having been in abusive relationships, I’m learning how to make my own decisions and enjoying having that choice.”
