Advances in Artificial Intelligence, quantum computing, robotics, and virtual reality are changing the way we see the world and impacting how we interact with each other and with public services.
Traditionally, technological developments have left public sector bodies behind. Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram is determined that Liverpool City Region not only tries to keep up with digital advances, but also takes advantage of them to establish the City Region as an entrepreneurial state.
We strive to use our existing assets and deliver new ones to help position our region as a leader in these emerging technologies, improving our citizens’ quality of life, growing our economy and improving access to opportunity.
Using AI for Good
Following Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram’s Manifesto, Liverpool City Region Combined Authority is committed to using AI for good by:
- Ensuring we harness the potential of AI for good, with appropriate safeguards in place, to deliver better services, start new businesses and position the region as a leader in its implementation.
- Establish an AI task force — chaired by the Chief Digital Officer — to set safe parameters for its use, understand the potential benefits of AI to Liverpool City Region, use AI in the development and delivery of all Combined Authority policies, revolutionise public services across the city region, and use our digital assets to be a leader in responsible AI.
- Working alongside our trade unions to ensure that the Liverpool City Region leads the country in ensuring the AI revolution is fair and just. This technology can improve people’s quality of life and support them in their jobs rather than forcing them out. Ensuring that the boom in AI will not lead to a boom in redundancies and erosion of workers’ rights.
- Producing a model of best practice that can be replicated nationwide, with a published report showcasing how our region can develop AI and its guardrails.
Liverpool City Region AI Summit
On November 21st we hosted the first Liverpool City Region AI Summit, bringing together some of the brightest minds in Artificial Intelligence.
It was a landmark event which highlighted how AI is being used to solve real-world challenges – from transforming healthcare to revolutionising education – and how it can drive a fairer, more inclusive society.
It also showcased the city region’s world-leading Artificial Intelligence expertise, while addressing ethical issues.
