Jamie Carragher Supports LCR Cares

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher’s 23 Foundation has donated £5,000 to support the LCR Cares COVID-19 Community Fund.

LCR Cares was launched by Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram in partnership with registered charity Community Foundation for Merseyside, with the aim of raising £1million to support local community and voluntary organisations on the frontline of helping the city region’s communities cope with the impact of Coronavirus.

Speaking about the donation, Jamie Carragher said: “Coronavirus is affecting all of us, there are people across the whole of the Liverpool City Region already suffering.  Voluntary and charitable organisations play a vital role in ensuring people get the support they need, and giving what you can to LCR Cares is a brilliant way for all of us to make sure these community heroes continue to carry out their invaluable work at this difficult time. That’s why the 23 Foundation, in addition to the community projects it is already supporting, has made a donation to LCR Cares.”

Steve Rotheram, Metro Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, said: “It’s fantastic that Jamie is able to get behind LCR Cares, alongside the other organisations the 23 Foundation is supporting.  LCR Cares is already making a difference to the most vulnerable, with organisations working at the grassroots level, delivering vital support within our communities.

“I know these are tough times for many people and businesses but it’s during tough times that we need to stand in solidarity with each other and give what we can to ease the burden on those in need.”

Rae Brooke, Chief Executive for the Community Foundation for Merseyside, said: “We have worked with Jamie for more than 10 years, managing and distributing funds for the 23 Foundation. We are thrilled Jamie is highlighting the importance of the LCR Cares COVID-19 Community Support Fund. We hope his contribution, alongside other donations, will encourage others to give if they are able. This will enable us to distribute funds to help the most vulnerable in our community at this exceptional time of need”.

The LCR Cares Fund now stands at around £450,000 and has already given £75,000 to 17 organisations.  Based across the Liverpool City Region, the first recipients include community organisations providing vital services such as foodbanks, delivery of food and care packages to vulnerable people, telephone and online services offering friendship and helping reduce isolation, as well as mental health support during this difficult time.

Jamie Carragher, former vice-captain of Liverpool FC, who made 737 appearances for the club, created the 23 Foundation in 2009 to help make a difference to the young people of Merseyside by offering “help to give local kids a chance”.  More than a decade later, the Foundation continues to support young people and families in deprivation. As well as supporting sick, disabled and disadvantaged children, the 23 Foundation also helps community organisations and not-for profit organisations that support and provide services for young people and families.
