House of the Future Competition

Pupils across the Liverpool City Region are being challenged to design how our homes could look in years to come as part of the House of the Future Competition.

This exciting competition, which is free to enter, explores important current issues in our environment, cities and communities, and considers how design responds to our changing needs.

It invites pupils in years 5 and 6 to come up with exciting ideas for our future homes with the chance to win prizes for themselves and their schools.

Children will be encouraged to think about important issues in their environment, how they would like their spaces to feel, different types of materials, what activities they think are important and more.

They will then transform these ideas into a choice of visual work, 3D models, or both, to communicate their house designs and vision.

Launching the competition, Metro Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, Steve Rotheram said:

“Working to make our environment cleaner and greener for the future was one of my key manifesto pledges. So what better way to find out what the homes of tomorrow should look like than to ask the future adults of our city region?  We are already taking steps to reduce the impact on our environment. We have adopted a Zero Carbon target of 2040, 10 years ahead of the national target, and have launched the £10m Green Investment Fund. But these young people are the ones who will end up having responsibility for what we leave behind and their ideas can change things which will hopefully point us all in the right direction for a greener future.”

The competition will be judged by Steve Rotheram, Architect Paul Monaghan who is the Liverpool City Region Design Champion, Barbara Spicer CBE, the Chief Executive of Plus Dane Housing Group, the Metro Mayor’s Housing Advisor, Danielle Gillespie, General Manager of Homes England and Mairi Johnson, the Director of Estates at National Museums Liverpool.

Paul Monaghan said:

“This ideas competition is a fantastic initiative. With housing being such a huge issue at the moment I think it will be great to see how these young people design their own House of the Future. As Liverpool City Region Design Champion I really want to encourage school children to get involved in design, engineering and construction and this a great way to get people started.”

Barbara Spicer said:

“What a brilliant competition for the Metro Mayor to be running! Our children respect our planet and its resources in a way that we never did at that age – and I’m sure this will be reflected in the built environment designs they bring forward. I’m really looking forward to see some crazy ideas and creations and am delighted to be involved”

The House of the Future competition is open to primary schools across Liverpool City Region, which includes Halton, Knowsley, Liverpool, Sefton, St. Helens and Wirral.

Prizes will be awarded to the winners and the overall winner will have their design worked up into a professional architect’s drawing by Owen Ellis Architects. All the judge’s selections will be framed and exhibited in a central Liverpool location.

The competition closes on 29^th November 2019 and all the judge’s selections will be exhibited in central Liverpool in Early 2020.
